Our History
The Church At Greens Creek had its birth on February 18, 1876. On that date, a Sunday School was organized at the house of Uncle Roberson Kiker which was a one-room log cabin on what is now Mayfield Farm and Ranch.
As far as we have been able to ascertain, the following persons comprised this group: Mr. and Mrs. Roberson Kiker and children, Charley and Jimmie and his stepdaughter; Era B. Phillips; Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Kiker and children, Alonso, Walter, and Henry; Mr. and Mrs. N.P. Kiker and children, Russell and Dora.
Soon afterward, the following families joined this Sunday School: Rev. J.E. Morton; Rev. U.J. Morton; R.S. Bradley; Tom Culwell, and families.
The Sunday School met in the homes of its members until the following spring when they built a brush arbor just east of where the Upper Greens Creek Cemetery now stands. In the fall, a log school house that served for both school and Sunday School was erected near this arbor. In that building, the Rev. S.W. Randall organized the first Greens Creek Methodist Church in 1879. The membership was practically the same as that of the Sunday School.
In 1882 Rev. R.L. Roberson built the present church building on the Old Greens Creek Campground about a mile south of highway 67 on the east side of Greens Creek. During the pastorate of Rev. W.J. Lemmons in 1895, the Tabernacle was built, tents were set up, and people went there to camp. Many built camp houses.
In March 1907 under the pastorate of Rev. Maxwell the church was moved to its present location. Some years later the tabernacle was moved to where it now stands.
